Action note: In: Summary: ABSTRACT: This study entitled Indentification and Prevalence of Gastri-Intestinal Parasites Among Preschoolers, Aged 2-5 Years Old, of Barangay 871, Kahilom 1, Pandacan, Manila, was conducted last September to November, 2004. Slide preparation and examination were done in the Barangay Hall of Pandacan. Using Kato-Katz Modified Thick Smear Technique and Formalin-Ether ConcentrationTechniques, 61 out of 102 subjects examined were found positive from gastro-intestinal parasitism. Unfortunately, Harda-Mori Culture Method failed to cultivate the hookworm eggs into a more advance stage; the rhabditiform of filariform larvae. One protozoan and four species of helminths were diagnosed on the fecal samples of the participants. These include Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Hookworm eggs, Enterobius vermicularis and Blastocystis hominis. The total prevalence rate of gastro-intestinal parasitism in the area was 60%. Among the parasites found, Ascariasis (42%) is the most prevalent. This is followed by Trichuriasis (16%), Hookworm infection (10%), Enterobiasis (7%) and Blastocystosis (3%). Four factors were determined to be associated with gastro- intestinal parasitism. Nail biting habit, walking bare-footed, playing with flood/rain and handwashing rejected the null hypothesis stating that there is no association between the mentioned risk factors and gastro-intestinal parasitism.
