Action note: In: Summary: ABSTRACT: This study is both a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the televised 2016 presidential debates in the Philippines. Using Benoit's (2013) functional theory of political campaign discourse and the principles of debates, the study aimed to find out the extent of the candidates performance of the functions of discourse in the televised presidential debates and the extent of their adherence to the rules of debates as well as the relationship between the two. Both the texts and the visual aspects of the debates were subject to content analysis which was performed in three coding levels. The findings revealed that acclaims dominated utterances of the candidates, followed by attacks and then defenses. However, utterances focused more on character rather than on policy. Candidates adhered most the rules in terms of time conformance followed by turn-taking and manner of delivery the least. This study supports finding of previous studies that functions of political discourses cross national borders and cultures. The findings also became the basis for the formulation of the proposed guidelines in conducting, not just presidential debates, but televised political debates in the Philippines in general.
