ABSTRACT : The study aimed to evaluate a nutrition training program for Barangay Health Workers (BHWs); specifically, to describe the nature of the nutrition training program, explore the level of performance of the BHWs during training, and determine factors related to success (or failure) of the particular program. The evaluation model developed by Edward Suchman was modified and adapted for the study design. The subjects of the study were the BHWs who attended the training held in Tanay, Rizal (25 BHWs) and MIA, Pasay City (15 BHWs). There were two major sources of information, the evaluation questionnaires which were self-administered by the BHWs and observations made by a group of staff from UP-CPH and NS-DOH. The data generated were both qualitative - observation, and quantitative - questionnaire. All responses per item/question or per module/overall evaluation were treated independently of each other. Thus a BHW's response per item was treated as one, separate from his other responses. Only the responses to the first question of the module evaluation questionnaire, i.e. factors which facilitated or hindered training were subjected to statistical test. This dealt directly with the third specific objective of the study. Some of findings are: (1) one major reference, i.e. training manual on nutrition, helped standardize the training content, (2) Tanay trainees differ from Pasay trainees, the former were more active and enthusiastic in their participation, (3) Rapport between trainers and trainees were better in Tanay than in Pasay, (4) Time was found to have varied impact across the different modules in Tanay, but equally facilitative across the different modules in Pasay, and (5) Physical environment was fount to be equally facilitative across the different modules in Tanay and Pasay, however, in Tanay all aspects of physical environment were rated as 4 and only 2 in Pasay (5 : highest possible score).
