This study focused on phytoplankters as bioindicators for the assessment of water quality. It aimed to propose a laboratory activity in Ecology. It measured the following variables of the study: the relative abundance, Shannon-Weiner diversity complex index and physiochemical parameters of Estero de San Miguel. It also measured the significant difference between the three water station, and between dry season and wet season. The correlation between the physiochemical parameters and the relative abundance and diversity of phytoplankters were measured as well. This descriptive study indicates no significant differences between the three water stations along Estero de San Miguel. There was no significant difference between the abundance of phytoplankters in the dry and wet season. And, there was no significant relationship between the physiochemical parameters and phytoplankters relative abundance. This was mainly influenced by the constant influx of pollution from the residential area within the vicinity of the estero. Based on the results, the researcher was able to come up with a structured laboratory activity. Using the conceptual view of phytoplankters and physiochemical attributes of water, the researcher aims to use this output as guide for the students to assess water quality. The laboratory activity is applicable to tertiary education students enrolled in the subject Ecology. It can be administered during the lesson chapter on Aquatic Ecosystem, and Field Ecology. The activity in this output can be accomplished in two 3-hour laboratory meetings. Based on the results, this study recommends further physiochemical parameter measurements, and expansion of other organisms as bioindicators. It also recommends comparative study of the different water forms in Manila.
