ABSTRACT: Statement of the Problem 1. Can a film in the Second Language be an effective tool used in teaching the Second Language? 2. What Is the role of the First Language in understanding a film in the 2nd language among the first year students of Victorious Christian Montessori College? 3. In this study, does the First Language impede or promote the students understanding of the Second Language? 4. How does the Language translation help in the students understanding of the Second Language? Research Design to be Used This research used the exploratory research design to extract the important data from the respondents that will show their language skill competency that will help to determine the assessment of the Filipino Language (L1) in learning the English Language (L1) in learning the English Language Research Instruments For this study, the researchers would use three instruments the survey, comprehension test and interview. Statistical Treatment of Data The researchers used the following formula in computing for the statistical based on the result of the comprehension test conducted: Statistical Treatment of Data Formula 1 (Mean) Formula 2 (Simple Percentage) Percentage of the Scores = Raw Score Total Scores Formula 3 (Simple Percentage) Percentage of the Respondents = number of students Total number of Students Where: EN = the summation of the raw scores of the students based on the results of the Comprehension Test N = number of students Findings: 97% of the respondents passed the assessment that the researchers made. Most of the scores ranged from 18-20 which means the students were able to comprehend the movie. Based on the answers of the respondents on the interview, one factor that helped the students in understanding the movie was translating familiar English words in their first language. Conclusion Based on the results of the study that was conducted, the researchers came up to the following conclusions: 1. The use of the film viewing in teaching the second language is really effective because it will be a new experience for the students. It will encourage them to listen and may test more their listening and comprehension skills. 2. The First Language serves as the basic foundation for us to understand and learn the second language. 3. The similarity in the structure of the Filipino language and the English language generated positive language transfer. 4. The First Language helped induced understanding of the Second Language through language translation while in the process of viewing the film. 5. The first year students of Victorious Montessori College were able to pass the Comprehension Test. Recommendations Based on the findings and conclusions, the researchers would like to give the following recommendations: For the teacher: 1. Use of new technology in teaching like film viewing can catch the students interest in learning a specific lesson. 2. Encourage the students to appreciate the Filipino and English language and make them realize its importance for productive communication. 3. Use movie in the second language as a motivational instrument in approaching lesson. For the students: 4. Value our native language. We are still open to the idea of learning other language but we really have to see our native language worth. For the parents: 5. Lt your child master his/her native language first before teaching another language. For Future Researcher 6. Those who would like to do the same study that we did, we proposed if you like, to use correlation as your research method. You need to provide two sets of test questionnaires. The first one is in Filipino while the other one in English.
