ABSTRACT: Parents of children with autism face struggles with the lifelong development disability of their child. Due to this, parents of children with autism continually utilize mechanisms and this may affect their parenting styles. The main objective of this study is to determine if there is a significant difference between the parenting styles and coping mechanisms of parents of children with autism. Descriptive correlation method was used to determine the parenting styles and coping mechanisms of parents of children with autism. Moreover, a survey questionnaire was used as a tool to gather data for the study. The researchers chose fifty (50) respondents from Gen. Maximo Hizon Elementary School which caters children with autism. After the questionnaires were gathered, different statistical treatments were used to test the hypotheses and answer the objectives of the study. The results of the study show that most of the parents age range from 31-40 years old. Respondents are mostly college graduates. Most respondents have a monthly income of 10,001-20,000 per month. As for the parenting styles, authoritative parenting style has high extent, authoritarian parenting style has moderate extent and permissive parenting style has very low extent. On the other hand, problem-focused coping mechanism, appraisal-focused coping mechanism and emotion-focused coping mechanism has an interpretation of moderate extent. Over-all, the researchers therefore conclude that there is a significant difference on the parenting styles and coping mechanisms of parents of children with autism. Specifically, the difference between the authoritarian parenting styles to the coping mechanisms was observed in the results. Furthermore, the output of the study is an instructional health program.
