ABSTRACT. The study purports to develop a set of nursing norms on cup feeding technique for premature infants. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of premature infants in terms of: a. gestational age; b. birthweight; and c. stomach capacity? 2. What are the perceptions of the staff of NICU, Fabella on the occurrence of cup feeding as basis for the development of nursing norms in terms of: a. gestational age b. birthweight; c. stomach capacity; d. frequency of feeding; e. position of infant during feeding; and f. position of infant after feeding? 3. What are the nursing norms on cup feeding technique for premature infants? 4. What are the problems encountered by the staff during cup feeding sessions? Procedure In this study the descriptive method was used to develop a nursing norms on cup feeding technique for premature infants using questionnaire-checklist, unstructured and in-depth interviews, and actual participation in the care of ten premature infants on eight-hour duty by the researcher at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital. There were thirty five (35) staff as respondents. The individual records of four hundred forty six premature infants without abnormalities admitted from the period of January to June 1995 were reviewed and analyzed. Data were treated statistically, using percentage and mean. Findings The nursing norms on cup feeding technique for premature infants are as follows: 1. Premature infant has a gestational age of 33-35 weeks. 2. The birthweight of 1,500-2,200 gms. 3. Feeding is given on self-demand schedule. 4. The amount of initial feeding was 3-5 cc of breastmilk. 5. Semi-sitting position during feeding is followed. 6. Side-lying position after feeding is done.. The problems encountered by staff during cup feeding sessions include: 1. Long process of feeding technique. Premature infant is being fed for 5-10 minutes to avoid large spillage of milk and choking. 2. Milk spillage. The premature infant's underdevelopment of sucking and swallowing reflexes make the spillage of milk very evident. 3. Baby tires easily. Sucking requires energy thus when the premature suckles on cup it needed extra energy but due to its immaturity it can not tolerate long period of sucking. 4. Indecisiveness to handle infant. As new comer in the area, she verbalizes that she was indecisive to handle premature due to its frail body. Conclusion The following conclusions were drawn in this study: 1. The nursing norms on cup feeding for premature infants include: a. Premature infant gestational age of 34 weeks. b. The birthweight of the infant is from 1800 to 2200 gms. c. The amount of initial feeding is 3 cc. d. Feeding is given on self demand-schedule. e. Position of the infant is semi-sitting during feeding and side-lying after feeding. 2. With this developed nursing norms on cup feeding technique, the health workers will have guidelines to follow. 3. The availability of nursing norms on cup feeding technique will prevent the delay of initiating the feeding of prematures and the oral gratification will be met. There is no need for the staff to wait for the doctor's order to whom and when to start feeding. 4. With the findings of this study, other hospitals will be encouraged to implement cup feeding technique because of its effectiveness.
