ABSTRACT. Statement of the Problem: This study aims to determine the correlation of motivation and learning strategies to academic performance in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology of third year nursing students. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the academic performance of the respondents in Anatomy and Physiology? 2. What is the academic performance of the respondents in Pathophysiology? 3. What are the motivation and learning strategies of the respondents towards Anatomy and Physiology in terms of: 3.1 Intrinsic Goal Orientation 3.2 Extrinsic Goal Orientation 3.3 Self-Efficacy for Learning & Performance 3.4 Metacognitive Self-Regulation 3.5 Time & Study Environment Management 4. What are the motivation and learning strategies of the respondents towards Pathophysiology in terms of: 4.1 Intrinsic Goal Orientation 4.2 Extrinsic Goal Orientation 4.3 Self-Efficacy for Learning & Performance 4.4 Metacognitive Self-Regulation 4.5 Time & Study Environment Management 5. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and their motivation and learning strategies in Anatomy and Physiology? 6. Is there a significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and their motivation and learning strategies in Pathophysiology? 7. Is there a significant relationship between the respondent's motivation and learning strategies in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology? 8. Is there a significant relationship between the respondent's academic performance in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology? Hypotheses: The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Ho1: There is no significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and their motivation and learning strategies in Anatomy and Pathophysiology? Ho2: There is no significant relationship between the academic performance of the respondents and their motivation and learning strategies in Pathophysiology? Ho3: There is no significant relationship between the respondent's motivation and learning strategies in Anatomy and Pathophysiology. Ho4: There is no significant relationship between the respondent's academic performance in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology. Significance of the Study: The results of the study may provide benefits of the following: Nursing Students. The study will help students establish more effective learning in the subject anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology upon the identification of learning strategies that affect their academic performance. Moreover, they will be equipped with sufficient knowledge regarding the subject that will be useful in their clinical exposure and future practice in the nursing career. In addition, the results of the study can help the students establish a more effective study plan that will further enhance their knowledge and study skills. Thereby improving their academic performance. Nursing Faculty. they can benefit from the study because the result may render them awareness of the students' needs in acquiring a good Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology education. It will provide them an improved quality of education to the students. Furthermore, the study can help the faculty identify a suitable teaching strategy to meet the students learning needs in Anatomy and Physiology. Also, the study can help the instructors identify the students' present strategy towards learning and thus appropriately respond to their needs. Nursing Education. Since the study involves identification of the relationship between the respondent's academic performance and their learning strategies, the students and faculty will gain understanding on the strengths and weaknesses that exist in the learning of the subject thus serving as a tool for enhancing and producing quality nursing education. The result of the study can also benefit nursing education by identifying some flaws common to students and thus serve as a reference for both students and faculty in determining an effective learning strategy. Nursing Research. Undertaking the research study will provide basis for future research that can further improve the learning of nursing students making them perform competently in other aspects of thee nursing field that their students need. The results of the study can provide useful information not only in the nursing courses as well that is directed to achieve excellence of university as a whole. Scope and Limitation The study is designed to determine thee relationship between motivation and learning strategies and the academic performance of selected level three nursing students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. A random selection was done to the two hundred three third year nursing students to complete the one hundred thirty five total samples. The study was conducted for the first semester of Academic Year 2008-2009. The necessary data needed for the study were obtained through the use of questionnaires that were disseminated to the students for a period of one week. The questionnaire that was utilized was adopted from Cobb (2003). The respondents' final grades in the subjects Anatomy and Physiology were obtained from the College of Nursing academic files that served as the basis for the respondents' level of academic performance in two subjects. The study will be limited to the students' self-evaluation on their motivation and learning strategy in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology in terms of: a. Intrinsic Goal Orientation b. Extrinsic Goal Orientation c. Self-Efficacy for Learning & Performance d. Metacognitive Self-Regulation e. Time & Study Environment Management The study will determine which motivation and learning strategy area is highly significant to the student's academic performance and will therefore serve as basis for recommendations on how to further improve the student's academic performance in Anatomy and Physiology and Pathophysiology.
