After six years of establishment, the Bataan Colleges' College of Nursing need an evaluation to assess its status and the achievement of its mission and vision, that is, the development of competent, caring and dedicated nurses to be responsive to the clients in the promotion of health, prevention of illness, restoration of well-being, and rehabilitation to a more productive and meaningful life. The study aims to identify the nursing education in terms of strengths and weaknesses, what areas need enhancement and strategies that would be implemented to overcome weaknesses. This study would be valuable to the Board of Trustees because they will be able to see the needs of the institution as revealed by the study. This would help the faculty strengthen their teaching methodologies, the students to be able to acquire knowledge, skills and attitude and be better prepared to the world of work. The community as the recipients of the service rendered by the student nurses will be able to receive quality care. An assessment of the nursing education program will help and assist the institution to review the program if it is in consonance with the standard set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). An evaluation of the program will help assess whether the vision and mission of the college is achieved. Statement of Purpose This study attempts to assess the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of Bataan Colleges. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the characteristics of the College of Nursing in terms of the following principal areas of the Quality Enhancement Model: 1.1 Curriculum 1.2 Relationship to the World of Practice 1.3 Student 1.4 Faculty 1.5 Governance 2. What are the areas of the program which need enhancement based on the following: 2.1 Curriculum 2.2 Relationship to the World of Practice 2.3 Student 2.4 Faculty 2.5 Governance 3. What strategies maybe implemented to overcome the weaknesses of the Nursing program of Bataan Colleges' College of Nursing based on the five variables: 3.1 Curriculum 3.2 Relationship to the World of Practice 3.3 Student 3.4 Faculty 3.5 Governance The conceptual framework of the study is anchored on the premise that growth and excellence in nursing education program can be attained through the identification of an institution's characteristics such as its strengths and weaknesses which could be an instrument for change. Evaluating the nursing education program will bring about development measures and innovations for quality and excellence of nursing education in the Philippines. A descriptive study using evaluative method was utilized in presenting the answers to the research problem. The Bataan Colleges' of Nursing was used as research locale. The samples of the study was composed of 138 respondents: faculty, alumni and students. Purposive sampling was utilized for the faculty and students belonging to Level III and Level IV while convenient sampling method was utilized for the alumni. The study utilized the Evaluation Questionnaire for Nursing Schools also known as the Quality Enhancement Model (QEM) developed by Dr. Remigia Nathanielsz of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The questionnaire has five principal areas of concern; Curriculum, Relationship to the World of Practice, Student, Faculty, Governance. There are 76 items in the questionnaire where respondents were asked to select using a 5-point Likert scale where 5 means Excellent, 4 means Very Satisfactory, 3 means Satisfactory, means Fair and 1 means Poor. DK (Don't Know) and NA (Not Applicable) were also provided. Mean scores by sub-areas and across the three groups of respondents were computed. The following findings were derived from the study: 1. The areas that were characterized generally as Very Satisfactory were: Curriculum, Relationship to the World of Practice in Clinical and Field Based Experience, Students, and Faculty. 2. The areas that were rated Satisfactory were the following: Delivery of the Curriculum, Relationship with Graduates, Advisory Services, Personnel and Funding Resources, Books, Materials, Equipment and Supplies. The following are recommendations based on the findings of the study: 1. The Administration work towards increase in budget to support operation of the college. 2. Faculty members undergo regular training on instructional methodologies and updates on current methods of instruction and counselling. 3. The College provides for the Placement Services Program for their graduates. 4. The College improves the program on Community Extension Services. 5. The Quality Enhancement Model should be supplemented with other instruments towards accreditation of nursing schools. Other editions:
