Action note: In: Summary: ABSTRACT: Community Immersion Program (CIP) is the Community Health Nursing practicum of Level IV students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, an integral part of Community Health Nursing III. It is a third level experience designed to enable the students to apply the concepts of primary health care (PHC) and community organizing in a real community set-up. This study aimed to determine the relationship between teaching competency of the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and the learning performance of the residents in Sapang 1, Ternate, Cavite. Specifically, it answers the following questions regarding the level of competency of the BHWs as the indicated by the ratings in personality, area management, quality of strategies used in teaching, mastery of the subject , and substance of the lesson; the learning performance of the residents as shown by the summative evaluation; and whether there is a significant relationship between the BHWs rating on their teaching competencies and the learning performance of the residents. The descriptive correlational type of research design was used in the conduction of the study. The researchers used the whole population of the respondents who were able to participate in the health teaching conducted were all given a summative test and evaluation form about teaching competencies of BHW and their data were utilized. The researchers adopted and modified their questionnaire from the evaluation tool used by the whole university in evaluating the teaching competencies of their faculty. The said questionnaire was subjected to content validation by the faculty instructors of the College of Nursing. Statistical treatments that were used to interpret data were frequency and percentage distribution, weighted mean average, and Pearson's R formula. The result of the FDT showed that out of 50 respondents, 30 of them or 60% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Conducts oneself verbally and non-verbally in a dignified manner and sets an example in terms of character under the competency of personality, of them of 34% gave 1.00 in terms of the category - Manifest enthusiasm, resourcefulness and creativity under the competency of personality, 18 of them or 36% gave 1.00 in terms of the category. Shows respect and consideration for student's feelings and opinions and interact with Students in approachable manner under the competency of personality, 20 of them or 40% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Starts and dismisses session on time under the contemporary of Area Management, 19 of them or 38% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Give proper instructions to the participants before the start of activities/topics under the competency of the Area Management, 25 of them or 50% gave 1.00 in terms of the category implements rules and policies of the Barangay under the competency of Area Management, 23 of them or 46% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Presents lesson audibly and clearly in an organized manner under the competency of Quality Strategies used in Teaching, 14 of them or 28% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Applies variety of teaching methods and strategies under the competency of Quality of Strategies used in Teaching, 16 of them or 32% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Encourages learner's participation in discussion/activities under the competency of Quality of Strategies used in Teaching, 20 respondents gave 1.00 in terms of thy BHW's knowledge/mastery of the subject matter under the competency of Mastery of the Subject, 15 of them or 30% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Answers questions adequately and respects learners ideas under the competency of Mastery of the Subject, 22 of them of 44% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Emphasize important points of the lesson under the competency of Mastery of the Subject, 23 of them or 46% gave 1.00 in terms of the category. Discusses things that are relevant to the topic under the competency of Substance of the Lesson, 16 of them or 32% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Summarizes the lesson at the end of the session under the competency of Substance of the Lesson, 19 of them or 38% gave 1.00 in terms of the category Deepens the discussion through relevant questions and examples under the competency of Substance of the Lesson. Using the frequency distribution with exactly fifty respondents and utilizing a series of pretest and post test after the heath teaching by BHW, the mean score of the pretest computed a total of 9.8 with a standard deviation of 2.53 ( x + SD = 9.8+2.53) while the post test computed a total of 13.2 with a standard deviation of 2.46 ( x+ SD=13.2+2.46). This shows that the respondents who took the test passed both in the pretest and in post test maintaining a fifty percent passing score of 9. Utilizing the statistical treatment paired T - test with level of significance of 0.05, the differential mean score resulted in a positive 3.4 rendering a significant difference between the pretest and post test after the health teaching was conducted. It maybe concluded that the health teaching rendered to the respondents was effective due to the increase in the mean score of post test after the health teaching was conducted. The Pearson r value at level of 0.05 alpha is 0.059 interpreted as very low correlation, almost negligible. This implies that there is no significant relationship between the post test score and the ratings evaluated by the respondents. This may be because the tool utilized by the researchers were meant to be used for classroom settings wherein the teachers were professionally trained unlike the BHW's whom may be part of their responsibility is to conduct health teachings in the community but doesn't require to undergo specialized training. With the findings and conclusions that resulted, the researchers recommend the following: further studies should be done to confirm the initial results of the study using a larger number of population and more sophisticated statistical models; another study could be done assessing which of the teaching competencies were more motivating for the learners to receive an effective health teaching; another study can be conducted regarding the external factors or other variables such as age, marital status and sex that effect the rating of the respondents-participants to the BHW's, another can be done utilizing different tool source aside from what was used in this research which is based in classroom settings.
