ABSTRACT: This study compared the effectiveness of the regimen using oral hypoglycemic agent with diabetic food supplement and oral hypoglycemic agent only on blood glucose of Type II DM patients. The study was guided by Dorothea Orem's Self-care deficit theory which asserts that goal of nursing is to help people meet their own therapeutic self-care demands. In a medical mission in Paco, Manila, the researchers purposely selected 15 type 2 diabetics currently taking OHA for at least six months and with no other complications unrelated to DM as participants. In the data gathering process, baseline blood glucose levels of the participants were gathered prior to intake of the diabetic food supplements. For the next three consecutive weeks, blood glucose levels of the participants were measured weekly with their daily intake of diabetic food supplements combined with OHA. All blood glucose measurements were validated and countersigned by a doctor in the monitoring form. ANOVA and experimental crossover design were used as statistical treatment. Consequently, data were tested at 0.01 level of significance. The study achieved significant improvement in the blood glucose results by the fourth week of experimentation, or the third week of continuous use of the diabetic food supplement. In conclusion, the alternative therapy that was proposed was indeed effective in lowering blood glucose results of the participants.
