ABSTRACT: Level of Awareness of the Causes, Effects and Complications, and Preventions of Progression of Scoliosis among Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Bachelor of Science Major in Information Technology Students A.Y. 2010-2011. As students of physical therapy, who have enough knowledge of the condition, the researchers felt the significance to assess the awareness of the students regarding Scoliosis. Determining their awareness will help us further on how to address Scoliosis by increasing their knowledge through right patient education. The purpose of the study is to assess the level of awareness of PLM-IT students regarding Scoliosis and to impart valuable and pertinent information to it's possible Causes, Effects and Complications and modes of Prevention. This study was undertaken to answer the following question (1) What is the demographic profile of the respondents as to age, gender and year level; (2) What is the level of Awareness of the PLM IT students as to the causes of Scoliosis : Already present at birth, Cause is unknown, Weakness of muscles, Hereditary, Faulty posture, Leg deformities, Abnormal bone growth; (3) What is the level of Awareness of the PLM IT students as to the effects and complications of Scoliosis: cardiopulmonary complication, Low self-esteem, Severe disfigurement, Negative Body Image, Death Spinal Cord Compression, Low back pain, Depression, Easy Fatigue; (4) What is the level of Awareness of the PLM IT students as to preventions of progression of Scoliosis: Proper posture, innovatively designed chairs and tables, proper carrying of bag, bracing, exercises, surgery, early screening and detection. The study used a Descriptive method of research to answer the questions raised by the researchers. The researchers conducted their study at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. The main subjects of the study were all the students under the Bachelor of Science Major in Information Technology enrolled in A.Y. 2010-2011 from first year to fourth year. The sample size was obtained through Slovin's Formula. The respondents were obtained via Simple Random Sampling using the Lottery Technique. The researchers constructed their own questionnaire validated by Mr. Edmund P. Dillague, PTRP, Mr. Kenneth G. Cariaso PTRP, and Mr. Albert S. Ang, PTRP. The researchers used Modified Likert Scale that measured the level of awareness of IT students about the causes, effects and complications and modes of preventions of Scoliosis. Weighted Mean and Frequency was computed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences and was used to interpret the data. In accordance with the demographic profile of the respondents, most of the respondents were in the range of 17-18 years of age dominated by female and first year students. In accordance with data gathered, the level of awareness of the PLM IT students as to the causes of Scoliosis is Average in accordance with data gathered, the level of awareness of the PLM IT students as to the effects and complications of Scoliosis is Average. In accordance with data gathered, the level of awareness of the PLM IT students as to the modes of preventions of Scoliosis is High. After careful analysis of the findings of the research study and after drawing the conclusion, the researchers proposed to give handouts or pamphlets to PLM students. This pamphlet will focus on increasing the awareness of the students about Scoliosis with regards to its causes, effects and complications and preventions of progression. For the future researchers, the researchers recommend conducting a survey to other colleges and other schools to obtain bigger population samples for the improvement of the study.
