ABSTRACT: This study delved into the relationship of the student nurses perceived degree of usefulness of a multimedia instruction (video presentations) as a strategy for learning and their level of performance in the fundamental nursing skills. In addition, the researched tested the hypothesis at a level of significance of 0.05. The study was executed using the descriptive research design, using a self-constructed questionnaire and a modified return demonstration checklist as its tools. A probability sampling was utilized to obtain the number of the sample from the population. The total of number of the sample was 16 which consisted of the BSN 2nd year level of Block 1 students. It was conducted in the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. In the student nurses perceived degree of usefulness of the multimedia instruction as a strategy for learning, memory retention, skill acquisition, knowledge, and skill acquisition all had a very high extent. In their level of performance of the fundamental nursing skills, not as high as their perception, the students performed on a satisfactory performance level in Tracheostomy Care and Nasogastric Tube Insertion, while the three remaining skills (Suctioning, NGT Removal, and NGT Feeding) showed the students performance on a good performance level. Significant relationships were only found between the students perceived degree of the usefulness of the multimedia in terms of Memory Retention and Skill Acquisition, and the Fundamental Skill of NGT Removal and Tracheostomy Care respectively. The rest showed no significant relationships. In view of the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are hereby presented for consideration. First, student nurses may utilize multimedia complementary with other learning tools; second, Nursing educators may use multimedia instruction to enhance the students learning experience together with the actual skill demonstration; third, the nursing administration should develop activities and medium for instruction and give them a deeper comprehension about the difference of teaching traditionally only and using video presentations as a supplemental alternative; fourth, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila should establish an environment conducive to learning through the use of multimedia instruction; and the fifth, the future Researchers may utilize the results and outcomes of the study as it may serve as their basis in utilizing the concepts and methodologies applied in this research regarding the degree of usefulness of multimedia and its effect on the fundamental nursing skills of student nurses.
