ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to assess the staff nurses extent of readiness during hospital infectious disease outbreak. It specifically determined the extent of readiness in terms of knowledge and practice according to clinical background, investigation and surveillance, communication, infection control practice and leadership and management. The significant differences in the extent of readiness when respondents were grouped according to profile of age, department, years of experience and participation in the training program were also determined. It also measured significant relationships between knowledge and practices. The findings were purposively used to develop a training program based from low to lowest extent of readiness. The self-developed instrument was employed in this study. It used simulation scenarion-based questionnaire which basically composed of one or more short paragraphs that describe a situation short paragraphs that describe a situation plua a question that asks to make a decision. This is usually used to create scenes that provide a relatively realistic potrayal of situations. For statistical treatment, the researcher utilized mean percentage score, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson r to analyze and to interpret the gathered data. A total of 142 staff nurses became respondents. Majority of them were young adults, assigned in regular ward, with 1 to 2 years of experience and participated in the infection control training. The results indicated that the staff nurses extent of readiness in terms og knowledge was low to very low in treatment, notifiable diseases, infection control committee referral, interdisciplinary endorsement, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment and decision making. In terms of practice, staff nurses extent of readiness was low to very low in clinical feature, mode of transmission, patient listing, case definition, notifiable diseases, personal protective equipment and garbage disposal. It was noted that there was no significant difference in terms of knowledge when grouped according to age and participation in infection control training. However, there was a significant difference in terms of knowledge when grouped according to department and years of experience. The results further showed that there was no significant difference in the extent of readiness in terms of practice when grouped according to age and years of experience. Moreover, there was a significant difference according to practice when grouped according to department and participation to infection control training. Overall, there was no significant relationship between the staff nurses extent of readiness in terms of knowledge and practice. The results were used as a basis in developing a training program to enhance the knowledge and practice of staff nurses during hospital infectious disease outbreak.
