Abstract: This study investigates the socio-cultural and economic effects of dance competitions organized by the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila (DTCAM), particularly focusing on the events held at Kartilya ng Katipunan. Employing a quantitative methodology, the researchers distributed structured questionnaires to participants, viewers, and local business owners to gather data on their perceptions and experiences related to these competitions. Existing research has acknowledged the sociocultural and economic benefits of cultural events. For example, Herrero et al. (2006) demonstrated how cultural events support community engagement and stimulate local economic growth in their study of Salamanca 2002, the European Capital of Culture. On the other hand, the findings of this study reveal that these events significantly enhance community cohesion and promote cultural heritage, while also contributing to local economic growth through increased tourism and business activity. Participants reported improved social ties and opportunities for cultural expression, highlighting the competitions' role in preserving traditional Filipino dance forms. Despite recognizing positive impacts, the study underscores the need for systematic research to quantify these effects. Ultimately, this research aims to inform policymakers and cultural organizations about the value of cultural initiatives, advocating for continued support and development of dance competitions as vital components of Manila's cultural tourism strategy, as well as the need for creation of a structured evaluation system.
