Mapping the accessibility of public restrooms in Intramuros: An assessment and basis for strategic locations

Abstract: This study was conducted to address the lack of accessible public restrooms in Intramuros, a popular tourist destination in Manila. Using a quantitative correlational research design, surveys were distributed to tourists visiting Manila Cathedral, Plaza San Luis, and San Agustin Church to assess restroom accessibility, convenience, and satisfaction. Findings revealed that while restrooms are moderately accessible (mean = 3.33), they are inadequately distributed in high-traffic areas and fail to meet the needs of individuals with medical conditions (mean = 2.40). Existing facilities were found to be satisfactory in terms of cleanliness (mean = 3.08) but limited in number, leading to inconvenience for visitors. Initially, private establishments offering restrooms were excluded; however, the panelists recommended including them as public access options. Following the defense, the Philippine Presidents' Murals along Sta. Lucia Street was chosen as the proposed site for additional restroom facilities due to its lack of
nearby restrooms and cultural significance. The study recommends the installation of a culturally aesthetic portalet designed in consultation with an architect to blend functionality with heritage. Ultimately, addressing restroom accessibility through these solutions aims to improve the tourism experience.
