Walkability: improving pedestrian access in Binondo, Manila for walking tour / Noelli Kyle S. Ampol

This study explores the walkability of Binondo, Manila-home to the world's oldest Chinatown-as a foundational component for developing sustainable walking tours. With Binondo's cultural richness challenged by obstructed pathways, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, and dense traffic, this research aimed to assess the current pedestrian conditions and propose improvements to enhance tourism experience. Utilizing a quantitative research design, 120 participants were surveyed through a structured checklist focusing on five key areas: sidewalk conditions, street-crossing infrastructure, navigation aids, driver behavior, and environmental factors. Findings revealed moderate satisfaction with existing pedestrian access, with particular concerns, narrow sidewalks, heavy traffic, and a lack of resting amenities. Nonetheless, participants generally expressed confidence in their ability to navigate crossings and recognized the area's cultural value. The study concludes that targeted enhancements in pedestrian infrastructure, environmental quality, and community engagement can significantly improve walkability, support local businesses, and promote heritage conservation. The proposed walking tour routes aim to tranform Binondo into a more accessible, culturally immersive, and economicallly vibrant destination aligned with sustainable tourism goals.
