ABSTRACT : This article views the historical phenomenon of Asianism through the critical lenses of network and fantasy. A chance encounter in the late 1880's between Jose Rizal and Suehiro tetcho offers one snapshot of an early link in the Asianist network. The article explains how and why that link gave rise to fantasies about asianist solidarity in the part of Suehiro as seen particularly in the comic travelogue Oshi no ryoko (1889), but not on the part of Rizal. It also looks at the historical trajectory taken by asianism, and the different kinds of social daydreaming and projects encoded by subsequent scholarly and popular accounts of the Rizal -Suehiro meeting. 56
