ABSTRACT : This article seeks to identify and compare the historical, sociopolitical, and academic contexts that need to be explored in the analysis of the relations between the state and the historian in Indonesia and the Philippines, in particular during the Suharto and Marcos years. It identifies the contrasting patterns and features of the colonial experience that gave rise to (a) a nationalism that was more hegemonic in Indonesia and fluid in the Philippines; (b) the processes of state formation and state-society relations that set the tone for a more cooperative interaction in Indonesia and more adversarial in the Philippines; and (c) the later development of the history profession, and under a more restrictive atmosphere, in Indonesia than in the Philippines. These factors played a significant role in defining the character, modalities and contours of the state-historian relations in the two countries. 56
