ABSTRACT : This is a descriptive study on the use of media by the inmates at the Quezon City Jail. Ten percent (10%) of the inmates (267) prisoners was surveyed on the use of media inside the jail. A focus group discussion consisting of eight (8) inmates was conducted to support the findings of the survey. The study revealed that the inmates at the Quezon City jail have access to mass media. The inmates utilized the following: television, telephone, radio, newspaper, mobile phones, and internet. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the government agency in-charge of the jail, had no budget for media usage of prisoners. Television, radio, and newspapers were donated by relatives and concerned organizations. Jail officials allowed the use of media resources but imposed certain restrictions due to security and financial reasons. Media are important to the inmates due to the following reasons: (1) become source of information, (2) alleviate boredom, (3) provide entertainment, (4) ease loneliness, (5) facilitate camaraderie, and (5) help rehabilitate the prisoners. 56
