ABSTRACT : Dalag Ophicephalus striatus bloch, kanduli arius thalassinus ruppell, bia amblygobius phalaena cuvier et valenciennes and tilapia nilotica linnaeus collected from Laguna de Bay between Taguig and Binangonan area in August 1989 to July 1990 were analyzed for total mercury by atomic absorption spectrometry. The highest metal concentration in soft muscle tissue was observed in Dalag followed by kanduli, less in bia and least in tilapia with mean values of 0.021, 0.020, 0.013, and 0.008 ug/g, respectively. Analysis using two-way ANOVA showed a significant difference in the mean total mercury in ug/g in the difference fish samples, among the different months and the interaction between these two variables. mean total mercury of the four fish samples were significantly higher in April than in October. The results show that the levels of total mercury in the fish samples are below the World health Organization maximum tolerable consumption of mercury in food of 300 ug or 0.3 mg of total mercury per week. 56
