ABSTRACT : This report discusses the development and initiation of an undergraduate distance research project facilitated by synchronous video communication via the Internet. The pilot program had 3 steps: (1) the undergraduate researcher was trained in the fundamental principles of capillary electrophoresis (CE) using a Web site developed in-house; (2) the home-site mentor traveled to the distant site to assemble and install the CE instrument with the undergraduate researcher; and (3) identical experiments were conducted in real-time using duplex video communication. To assess the feasibility of distance communication for undergraduate research, interviews, journal logs, and examinations were used to determine improvement in the student's understanding of the research project, knowledge in the field of chemical separations, laboratory skill, and confidence. 56
