ABSTRACT : The authors describe the full-service community school model in action at Thomas Edison Elementary School in Port Chester, New York. Many of the families Edison serves are recent immigrants from Hispanic countries, and 80 percent of its students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. In the late 1990s, the school realized that problems associated with poverty were impeding student learning, leading to dismal scores on standardized tests. After surveying teachers, parents, community service organizations, and students to identify the central problems affecting learning, Edison formed partnerships with community organizations to address those problems within the school. Edison now provides school-based health care, family counseling and therapy for students in crisis, parent outreach and education, and after-school enrichment programs, as well as coordinating with local Manhattanville College to provide teachers with professional development. 56
