ABSTRACT : More than ever, assessment is in the national spotlight. In this time of state and national learning standards, learning outcomes, and various forms of student and teacher accountability, the need for evidence of student learning in physical education is paramount. Historically, physical educators tended to shy away from assessment because they did not need to show evidence of student learning. Perceived time and management issues of conducting assessment have contributed to the lack of assessment within the overall teaching-learning process. The purpose of this article is to explain and illustrate, using various assessment examples, how tapping into these five potential benefits of assessment can aid the teaching and learning process. By recognizing these potential benefits and making use of assessments, both the teacher and the learner can be supported, and teachers can overcome their concerns related to conducting assessment as part of the instructional process. Developmentally appropriate assessment tools can help determine where students are in the learning process and can maximize student learning. 56
