BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY: Waste disposal has been a long ang enduring problem for the past few decades here in the Philippines. One of the main contributors to our deteriorating state is the incessant and irresponsible use of plastic. In 2010 & 2011, audits by Greenpeace, EcoWaste, Mother Eart Foundation & Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives revealed plastic products-led by plastic bags-were the highest contributor in terms of garbage volume in Manila Bay and :aguna Lake. Separate surveys conducted by the same group showed plastic bags accounted for 51.4% of detritus in Manila Bay & 27.7% in 2010. The prevalence of plastic materials in our ecosystem augments the hurdles we face in our everyday life-aggravated flooding due to clogged drainages and obliteration of the natural habitats of our wildlife. Plastic is not biodegrable, therefore it always exists - breaking down and percolating toxins creating a threat to marine life and human. The technology of packaging our products has gone to a long way since time immemorial. Evolving from baskets made of reeds, wine skins, wooden boxes and woven bags, the mass production of plastic had begun in the 1940 and the 1950's. Due to its relative affordability and durability, the plastic industry boomed and up until now its usage is still widespread. Unfortunately, for the plastic business, its position in the packaging industry is being challenged by environment advocates who are perplexed by the impact that plastics are making through the years. Sharing the same sentiments as the advocates while seeing an opportunity in this challenge, this feasibility study perseveres to figure out the viability of brown paper as a worthy adversary of the leading packaging material.
