ABSTRACT: The study was conducted to identify and determine the prevalence rate of intestinal parasites among pupils of Padre Gomez Elementary School, Quezon Blvd., Sta. Cruz, Manila. A total of 100 stool samples were collected in a span of 2 months, December 2004 and Kanuary 2005. Using Formalin-Ether concentration Technique, Kato-Katz Smear Method, and Harada Mori Culture Method, stool samples were examined. A questionnaire was also given to the parents of the pupils which served as a survey to know which risk factors - age, sex, nail biting, source of water, playing with flood water, washing of hands, and walking bare foot - is the infection of parasites dependent. The analysis of the risk factor was done using chi-square test. The following intestinal parasites were observed: Ascaris lumbricoides (35%), Trichuris trichiura (14%), and Entramoebe coli (1%). Among the different risk factors, walking bare-foot was the one which was dependent of infecting the pupils, thus causing parasitic infection among the pupils of Padre Gomez Elementary School.
