Industry Profile The foundation of arts and crafts industry was first known at Mountain Province wherein Ifugaos were called the skilled artisans of different primitive works. Ifugao handicrafts utilize indigenous forest-based raw materials such as wood and vines. The Ifugaos ensure continued availability of forest raw materials by using cultural practices that involve continued replenishment and development of forest resources through what is known as muyong or private woodlots. The practice plays an important role in sustaining ecological balance. Ifugao handicrafts range from decorative to functional household items. Product designs revolve around nature themes such as animals, plants and people. Ethnocultural motifs are a distinctive trademark of Ifugao-made products but there is an effort to adapt as well t contemporary design trends. In this development, the Product Design and Development Center of the Philippines plays a key role.
