ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship among copepods, planktivorous fishes, and the physicochemical parameters of the water in Muzon River and Pansingan ni Ben, Malabon, Metro Manila. Density and frequency of occurrence (FO) were computed for copepods while catch per unit effort (CPUE) and relative abundance were computed for planktivorous fishes. Biodiversity indices (species richness, evenness, and diversity) were determined for both copepods and planktivorous fishes. Temperature, pH, salinity, DO, depth, transparency, total suspended solids, electric conductivity, and nutrients (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate) were also measured. A total of three genera of copepods (Tropocyclops, Thermocyclops, and Mesocyclops) were recorded, while seven genera of planktivorous fishes were collected (Oreochromis, Sarotherodon, Chanos, Pterygoplichthys, Mayatheros, Glossogobius, and Megalops). The results of biodiversity assessment for both copepod and planktivorous fishes reveal an almost even distribution, but with a very low diversity and richness in a disturbed community. PCA revealed that 7 out of the 21 principal components contributed the most variation in the whole dataset. CCA identified temperature, DO, salinity, and phosphate as the environmental variables that greatly influenced the population density of copepods. The results from the study revealed that there is an existing correlation and association among the physicochemical and biological parameters (copepods and planktivorous fishes), indicating the presence of ecological dynamics in the sites of Muzon River and Pansingan ni Ben.
