ABSTRACT: Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment. The Philippines is one of the contributors to the pollution of primary microplastics which can affect the diversity of our ecosystem, due to their small particle size (<5mm) it can be easily ingested by the marine species. Perna viridis or green mussels' feeding behavior increases their potential to ingest microplastics. The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between the consumption frequency of Microplastic-contaminated Perna viridis and the occurrence of common diarrhea among individuals aged 18-40 years old from Brgy. Binuangan, Obando Bulacan, Brgy. 20, Tondo Manila, and Brgy. 62, Cavite City. Four different MP shapes found among the three sampling sites with fiber and fragment are the most common shape found in all three sample sites whereas foam is found exclusively in Brgy. 20. Additionally, the highest number of MPs were extracted from Brgy. 20 yielding 0.041 MP/gram. In this study, the most abundant polymer type found in all sample sites is Polyamide (PA), followed by Polyurethane (PU) and the least abundant are Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polyester (PES) and Polystyrene (PS). In terms of correlation of green mussel consumption and occurrence of diarrhea among the healthy population, there is no significant correlation was found in either Brgy. Binuangan and Brgy. 62, while in Brgy. 20 shows a significant correlation.
