ABSTRACT: Cinematography visualizes how the story of a film would be conveyed to the audience through a series of motion pictures. As film is a visual form of storytelling, the overall appearance of a film is highly dependent on how it visually presented through cinematography. But despite this, cinematography is not given its due importance. More often, viewers tend to neglect the beauty and significance that that cinematography offers to a film that makes it a more meaningful storytelling medium. This video production thesis is entitled as: A Descriptive Study on the Inspirations and Experiences of Contemporary Cinematographers and their Visual Language Styles on their selected films. This study aimed to determine the inspirations and experiences of three contemporary Filipino cinematographers, namely Mr. Carlo Mendoza, Mr. Arvin Viola, and Mr. Jay Abello, and their visual language styles on their selected films as a basis for a video documentary. This qualitative research used the descriptive case study method in order to give an in-depth and detailed look at the motivations and experiences, and visual language styles of three contemporary cinematographers on their selected films. The researchers determined the appropriate candidates for the primary sample through the use of Purposive Sampling technique. While their selected films, which served as the secondary sample for the study, were evaluated with the use of Stratified Sampling technique. In-depth interviewing was the main data-gathering technique used in this study. For the primary instrument, the researchers employed the use of interview guides based on the contents of the statement of the problem in this study. Based on the data-gathering and interviews conducted, the researchers found out that the three contemporary cinematographers had different inspirations in shooting the films since the films were all different in terms of genres and stories. However, in terms of the visual language style, the cinematographers said that there was really no distinct style. Bonifacio: And Unang Pangulo was a period film and the inspirations came from paintings and Mendoza's prior experience in shooting other period films. Manila Kingpin : The Asiong Salonga Story was intended to be a film noir an they wanted to highlight the masculinity of the film by using hard lighting. The cinematography for Two Funerals was very natural and life-like. While Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa was poetic in nature and was delivered through painterely execution. The style for Brutus, Ang Paglalakbay was very natural and in accordance to what is needed for the film. Hari ng Tondo also wanted to achieve a more natural look to make it more realistic. Filmmaking is a collaborative effort, so it is essential for the cinematographer to have a good communication and effective working relationship with his colleagues such as the director, writer, and the production designer. The three contemporary cinematographers see the cinematography industry as more challenging and entails a never-ending learning process. For the future of the cinematography industry, Filipino cinematographers must be united and should be willing to share ideas so as to promote the industry. The researchers recommend that in order to further improve the knowledge of students who aspire to be a part of the film industry as cinematographer, they were advised to learn more about the importance of the roles of the director, writer, and the production designer as they are the ones who work closely with the cinematographers.
