ABSTRACT: The main objectives of this study were synthesize microcapsules, to graft the textile with microcapsules and to test the treated textile's mosquito repellent efficiency. Ionic Gelation Process was the method of microencapsulation used. The methanolic extract of the sugar apple leaf was the core material of the microcapsules. Alginates cross-linked with calcium ions served as the coating material. Uv-vis spectroscopy was used to determine the optimal microencapsulation condition. The optimal microencapsulation condition were 1% (w/v) sodium alginate concentration, 1% (w/v) calcium chloride concentration and 10 minutes cross-linking time. Microcapsules were characterized using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). These confirmed that the encapsulation of the extract within the alginate matrix was successful. The synthesized microcapsules were grafted onto 100% cotton fabric using bath exhaustion method. The treated textile was characterized using FT-IR Spectroscopy and SEM. These confirmed adherence of microcapsules on the fibers of the fabric. The mosquito repellency of treated textile was tested using World Health Organization (WHO) Cone Test method. It was found that the mean percentage repellency of textile tested 1 hour, 24 hours, and 48 hours after application were 87.22167, 33.33167and 35, respectively . These were compared to those of control treatments namely N.N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) and untreated with mean percentage repellency of 93 and 19, respectively. ANOVA and t-test were statistical treatments used. It was found that all pairs were significantly different except for 1 hour vs. DEET and 24 hours vs. 48 hours. It was found that the microcapsules solution of the methanolic extract of sugar apple leaf could be a mosquito repellent finish of cotton textile.
