ABSTRACT: The study conducted was done to identify the different parasites that could be found in the fruits and vegetables sold in Central market, Sta. Cruz and a Supermarket in Manila. The study lasted for a month, starting on the third week of October 2005 until second week of November. The samples were bought from the two markets, once every third of the week for five consecutive weeks. Each sample was assured of having a 100g weight for leafy vegetables and 250g for the bulk or fruit type. It was then washed with 350mL of tap water. The washings were collected aand stored in plastic container and were allowed to stand for 6 hours. The 340 mL of the liquid was decanted and the remaining 10 mL was centrifuged. The resulting sediments were stained with Lugol's Iodine and were examined microscopically. For the statistical analysis One-way ANOVA and test for two proportions have been used. Based on the study conducted, Ascaris sp. has been the major contaminant being present in 81% of the samples examined. While other organisms such as Hookworm ova present in 4.6% of the samples and a Coccidian oocyst present in 12.5% of the samples. And that the prevalence of parasite among the fruits and vegetables has no significant difference in contrast to the prevalence of parasites between the two markets which has a significant difference.
