Biology)- Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2005; 5 N2 - ABSTRACT: The studyn focused on the effects of the bisorption of Cd (II) on the external morphology and growth rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 2115. Culture of the strain of Saccharomyces cerevisia was purchased from BSRI, UP Diliman and was cultivated in universal yeast medium. The CSd (II) used was in the form of Cd (NO3). The samples were subjected to UV-VIS spectroscopy at the wavelength of 605 nm, for the determination of growth rate. For the sorption rate, the samples were subjected to AAS, Spectra 200, after which, the samples were put into slides and examined to SEM, JSM 5310 for the determination of external morphology. The results show that as the Cd (II) concentrations increased, cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae also increased in size and shape deformity was seen. The growth rate increased as time increased and was highest at 30 ppm Cd (II). On the other hand, the sorption rate decreased as metal concentration increased. Thus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae has the capacity to accumulate heavy metal like Cd (II) in aqueous media ER -
