Bioloy)-Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. 2005; 5 N2 - ABSTRACT: This study dealt with the sorption of Cu (II) by Ipomoea aquatica in a hydroponics solution for 7 days. I, aquatica seeds were cultivated in sterile soil for two weeks. After which, the seedlings were acclimated and placed in a static hydroponics solution of varying Cu (II) concentrations set at 5, 10, 15, and 20 ppm. At intervals of 12 hour, 20 ml water samples were taken from each replicate and analyzed through atomic absorption spectrometry. Slide preparations were done on the plants stem, leaves, and roots. After the study period, the plants were digested with concentrated sulfuric acid and were analyzed with AAS. Growth in terms of weight, root length, and stem length were analyzed. Sorption of Cu (II) by I, aquatica was fitted to the first linear order. The decreasing rate was, however, insignificant as compared to the control. Morphological changes include severe discoloration of the chlorophyll induced by high copper concentrations. Browning of root tips was also observed correlated to the lignin synthesis of the roots. High amount of copper accumulation was detected in the roots. Copper greatly inhibited root elongation and decreased the total mass of the plant after treatment ER -
