ABSTRACT: This study primarily aimed to determine the factors affecting the level of literary comprehension among students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng PASig. Descriptive method of research was employed in the conduct of the study. There were 132 respondents utilized to answer the four (4) part questionnaires. The data gathered were treated with frequency, percentage, and rank distribution, weighted mean and Pearson r. Based on the preparation, analysis and interpretation of data, the researcher summarized the following: Majority of the respondents obtained a rating within the range 2.0-2.4 meaning the respondents belonged to an average level of intelligence with enough knowledge and skills in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan. The setting of the short story showed discrimination in the society and unfortunate status of the people living in the squatter and rural areas in the city of Manila. The main character of the story possessed positive values like some of our good leaders who are really serving the people. Panimulang galaw of the short tackled daily activities in a real life situation in a community and also exposed the bad condition of the society. Sequencing in the presentation of every activity had been taken care of. The results revealed that the respondents had been tickled by the story since it presented a real life experience by people of good heart no matter how less fortunate they were. The plot of the story also dwelt on kalakasan/ kalinawan. The respondents considered that the story gave justice to the main character. The results meant that the respondents believed in every trial they encountered, justice prevailed and that happiness was just around to be achieved. The respondents also confirmed that the personal views of the author had been revealed in the short story. This simply meant that through readings, an individual could obtain a lot of information in different walks of life. That was an effective means of acquiring knowledge, latest issues and events especially if it involved diversity of society, nationalism, rights and freedom of every individual. Thus, it made a person well-rounded citizen. The results showed that love and respect to parents conquered all problems and difficulties in life. Self-respect and confidence could also surmount trials and worries in life. The respondents believed that as long as there was no physical attack, no physical harm could be made by rowdy person as well as no counter assault would be made. Simple and verbal harassment to a valued person could still be neglected and forgiven. The results showed that the respondents enjoyed reading the short story hence it encouraged the author to write more stories tackling the same theme but perhaps of different setting and plot. The most easily identified and comprehended element by the respondents was the theme. This was perhaps based on the manner of presentation of the story at the start where exposures of real life situations and daily activities moving in rural and depressed areas had been used. The results showed that amongst the factors identified, the lubos na kaalaman sa nilalaman ng binasa greatly affects the level of comprehension of the respondents. This only indicated that the reader have a full grasp and understanding of what the literary piece was trying to convey to the reader. It was believed that appreciation to what had been was based on how one could figure out every detail of the scene in a story. As to the test of hypothesis, the null hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between the level of comprehension and the learning styles and approaches, and grades in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan, are rejected. On the other hand, the identified factors have no significant effect on the level of comprehension of the respondents, hence, the null hypothesis is accepted. Based on the summary of findings, the researcher concluded that: Majority of the respondents obtained average grades in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan. The level of literary comprehension of the respondents obtained a very high rating based on the average weighted mean. Thus, their understanding regarding the literary materials they have read and analyzed was remarkable. The theme was considered the most easily identified and comprehended by the respondents. Experiences in real life situation could easily be comprehended when portrayed in any literary text. Factors identified in this study showed no effect on the level of literary comprehension of the respondents and therefore were regarded as independent components on the basis of understanding. The level of literary comprehension of the students in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan was greatly affected by the teaching styles and approaches of teachers and also of the grades obtained. Thus, varied styles and approaches used in teaching, produced better results in terms of literary comprehension of students. Moreover, the higher the grade of the students in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan the higher was their level of comprehension, and the lower the grades they had the lower was their level of comprehension. Based on the conclusions made, the researcher came up with the following recommendations: Students whose grades in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan below the average level and even above the average level must also be tested using similar materials in order to confirm its relationship- to the level of their literary comprehension. They must be exposed to varied types of literary text. Exposures to this type of materials would enable them to analyze different types of situations, thus developing in them creative and logical thinking. Attending seminars and workshops training would enable teachers to be aware and experience new styles and approaches in Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan. Sequel of the study is strongly recommended using other variables and instrument.
