ABSTRACT: The study aims to determine the effect of Mauban flyash as partial replacement of Portland cement in structural concrete. A 5000 psi design mix will be considered as the control mixture and the weight of cement in the control mix will be substituted partially by Mauban flyash ranging from 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% substitutions. Three cylinder specimens per batch (total of 18 cyclinders) and 6 beams specimens will be obtained from these batch mixes and tests for compression and flexure will be conducted, to determine its feasibility as a structural member (APPENDIX K). A cost comparison will also be undertaken between a 1 cubic meter of the psi control mixture and the Mauban flyash concrete mixture with the most economical flyash replacement. The agencies visited to gather data for this research were the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), The Philippine Cement Manufactures Association (PHILCEMCOR), Pozzolanic Philippines Inc., National Power Corporation Main Office, Mauban Quezon Coal Power Plant, and various cement and Batching Plants in the National Capital Region (APPENDICES H, I, and J). On June 14, 2003, the 6 trial mixes (5000 psi control specimen and 10, 15, 20, 25, 30% flyash specimens) were batched at the Bureau of Research and Standards laboratory, EDSA, Quezon City. Prior to this, all concrete components for this study were subjected to quality tests such as the tests for specific gravity, moisture content, unit weight, etc. (APPENDICES A and K). All concrete cylinder and beam specimens were placed in a curing period (July 1, 2003) and at 28 days curing period (July 14, 2003). Flexural test was conducted at 28 days curing period on July 14, 2003. The tests were all in accordance with ASTM and AASTHO Standards (APPENDIX F). The results of the study showed that 15% flyash replacement of Portland cement in structural concrete was the most efficient and economical replacement exceeding the 5000 psi design strength by almost 10% and is about 8% cheaper than an equivalent volume of the 5000 psi conventional concrete mixture. The result of tests also showed that Mauban flyash concrete up to 30% replacement of Portland cement exceeds the design modulus of rupture (fr) of a 5000 psi conventional concrete mixture, signifying its high flexural strength even at high substitutions.
