ABSTRACT. The main focus of this research is to assess the caregiving capacity of adolescent mothers in Barangays 735, 736, 743, 767, 775, 776, 781 and 782 of the District 5 of Manila as a basis for the development of guidelines in teenage parenting. This study was undertaken to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the adolescent mother in terms of a. Ordinal position b. Economic status c. Educational attainment 2. What is the psychosocial profile of the adolescent mothers in terms of the following factors a. Childhood experiences of adolescent mother b. Current parental/family relationship c. Knowledge of parental roles d. Perceived value of parental roles 3. What is the level of care-giving capacity of the adolescent mothers? 4. Is there a significant relationship between the demographic profile and psychosocial profile of the adolescent mothers? 5. Is there a significant relationship between the demographic n profile and the level of care-giving capacity of adolescent mothers? 6. What guidelines can be formulated for adolescent mothers in terms of parenting? Descriptive research in intended to achieve more information about the characteristics within the particular field of study. Under the subcategories of descriptive research is the correlational research. Correlational research shows the relationship between two or more variables in which the researchers can seek to explain and predict relationship among variables or test the relationship proposed by theoretical preposition. In order for the researchers to be able to emphasize the significance and importance of the study, descriptive correlational research will be used. Through this method, the extent to which the factors such as the demographic profile and the psychosocial profile of the adolescent mother in terms of childhood experiences of adolescent mother, current parental/family relationship, knowledge of parental roles and perceived value of parental roles, affect the caregiving capacity of teenage mothers could be deeply assessed and explored. Hence, the existing relationship between the factors mentioned and the caregiving capacity of teenage mothers could be further evaluated to come up with the guidelines that will be set forth by the researchers. The main instrument used in gathering data for this study is a questionnaire to find out pertinent information regarding the subjects demographic profile and the factors affecting their parenting performance. This is in a form of a checklist in order to gather concrete answers to the questions. The researchers reviewed previous studies similar to the study and looked for diagnostic tool that has already been used and validated, but failed to find a suitable questionnaire. Thus, the researchers developed a tool that was patterned from the different psychosocial factors presented in this study through the utilization of different related literatures and had it tested and validated by experts. Moreover, for the statistical treatment of data, the descriptive statistical measures that were used are mean and percentage computations. The weighted mean was used to evaluate current parental/family relationships, knowledge of parental roles, perceived values of parental role, and the level of performance of adolescent mothers in terms of parenting in describing the caregiving capacity of the teenage mothers. Percentage was used to determine the number occurrences of data per hundred. The chi-square test was used to test how well factors or set of data are related to each other. This test was used to determine the relationship of the demographic in correlation with the psychosocial factors illustrated in this study. Based on the findings of the study it was revealed that, in terms of demographic profile, adolescent mothers belong to the category of youngest child in the family, majority of these mothers fall below poverty line of economic status with monthly income of 3000 below, and majority of adolescent mothers only reached highs school level. In terms of the psychosocial factors, that affect caregiving capacity of adolescent mothers, knowledge of parental roles ranks first followed by level of performance, perceived value, childhood experiences, and family relations being last in the ranks. It was also found out6 in this study that there is a high level of caregiving capacity of adolescent mothers in terms of the care that they are providing to their child. As a result from the data gathered, there is a significant relationship between ordinal position and educational attainment with psychosocial factors of adolescent mothers. Adolescent mothers birth order affects their personality which in turn affects their sense of responsibility and the knowledge that they must gain taking care of their young. It is evident that the educational attainment of these mothers greatly affects the attitude and their outlook in their caregiving as they gather the information that they need in providing care. However, economic status bears no significant relationship with psychosocial factors of adolescent mothers. Even when these mothers don't have jobs or their families are not earning enough, it is remarkable that they are still able to provide the needs of their child. However, economic status and educational attainment incurred a significant relationship with the level of caregiving capacity of the adolescent mothers while ordinal position has no significant relationship with the caregiving capacity of the adolescent mothers while ordinal position has no significant relationship with the caregiving capacity of the adolescent mothers. It is noteworthy that the level of performance of their parenting, although adolescent mothers can provide the needs of their child, is being made difficult. But ordinal position, although can affect the psychosocial factors described in this study, cannot directly affect the level of performance of these adolescent mothers. They will have their individual functioning as mothers. Due to the results presented in this study, no guideline was able to be produced since no problem was seen with the caregiving of the adolescent mothers used in this study, they have exhibited a high level of caregiving in terms of their demographic and psychosocial profile.
