ABSTRACT: The main focus of this research was to determine if there was a significant difference between the effectiveness of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic home-based management of chronic pain of discharged orthopedic patients. This study was undertaken to answer the following questions: (1) What is the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: (a) Age (b) Sex (c) Length of chronic pain. (2) What is the health status of the respondents in terms of: (a) Diagnosis of current illness (b) Duration of illness (c) Care provider (d) Intensity of pain. (3) How effective are pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in alleviating chronic pain in terms of: (a) Intensity of pain (b) Duration of effect. (4) Is there a significant difference between the effectiveness of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic home-based management of chronic pain of discharged orthopedic patients? Polit and Beck of Nursing Research Seventh Edition defined descriptive research as a second broad class of non-experimental studies; its purpose was to observe, describe and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs and sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation of theory development. Since this study was home-based approach, this was non-experimental and therefore descriptive study was used. Convenient sampling was used in the study to gain data from the target population. Since population of the study was restricted only to orthopedic patients experiencing chronic pain, limited respondents was accessible and in order to complete the target population of thirty (30) at a limited amount of time, convenient sampling was used. The entire population of the study was gained from the discharged orthopedic patients of Philippine General Hospital that resided in Manila. The study was conducted between the months of August, September and October of 2008. The main or major instrument used in gathering the data for this study was a set of self-made questionnaires as a tool in determining if there was a significant difference between the pharmacologic home-based management of chronic pain of discharged orthopedic patients. Moreover, for the statistical treatment of data, the descriptive statistical measure that was used was frequency percentage computation. Inferential statistics was also utilized in the computations of average means, standard deviations from two different samples were then used for the computation of t test. T test (comparing two independent samples) was used to compare the two sample means and further test if there was a significant difference between the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic home-based management of chronic pain of discharged orthopedic patients. Based on the findings of the study it was revealed that in terms of age, 18 years old and below ranked 1 as the most number of respondents who suffers from chronic pain. Female ranked 1 over the male population among individuals who were mostly affected of chronic pain of orthopedic problem. Majority of the population in the study has chronic pain of 3-6 months. As regards on the respondents health status, it was found out that most respondents were affected by chronic pain osteomyelitis. In accordance, it was also revealed that most diagnosis was known in the month of May of 2008. Mothers of the patient were the usual care providers of the respondents who mostly has the rate of 8 in the intensity of chronic pain when gauge by the numerical pain scale. As a result from the data gathered, in the test of significant difference between the effectiveness of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic home-based treatment of chronic pain in discharged orthopedic patients, according the degree of freedom and 0.05 as the level of significance, it showed that the computed value of pain intensity was less than the tabulated value. Seemingly the computed value in the duration of pain was also less than the tabular value. In terms of intensity of pain and duration of effect, the decision was to accept the null hypothesis which stated that there was no significant difference between the effectiveness of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic home-based management of chronic pain in discharged orthopedic patients.
