<br/><br/> ABSTRACT:    	This study attempted to determine the factors affecting the generic and branded medication use of diabetic patients in two public hospitals, namely Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center (OMMC) and Tondo Medical Center (TMC).    	The researcher tested if there is a relationship between personal profile - age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, monthly living allowance with their medication use. The number of health information sources was also tested whether there is relationship with their medication use. The factors presumed such as prescribed by the physician, perceived as effective, perceived to have less side effects, affordability, availability, recommended by family, relatives and friends, and convinced by endorsements and advertisements were also tested if there is relationship with their medication use, whether generic, branded or a combination of both. The descriptive survey method was employed in the study. A total of sixty-six (66) respondents were taken from two public hospitals OMMC and TMC. Convenience sampling was utilized in choosing these respondents.    	The data were gathered through survey questionnaire designed by the researcher. The data gathered were computed using Microsoft Excel with the following statistical measures: frequency and percentage distribution and chi-square. Majority of the respondents are aged 36-46 years, female, married, high school graduate, with monthly living allowance ranging from P 3,000 to P 7,624, and has three different sources of health information. Among the profile of the respondents, only educational attainment, monthly living allowance, and number of health information sources have significant relationship with their medication use. Among the stated factors, it is only the affordably that has the significant relationship on the respondents use of medication.    	Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that the diabetic patients perform better pharmacologic management of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and exercise their right in choosing whether branded, generic or combination of both medications professional nurses and nursing student must exercise their function as patient advocate, provide information about generic and branded medications and guide patients in choosing, while taking into consideration their profile specifically their financial background. Other Health Care Professionals such as doctors, pharmacists, medical representatives, pharmaceutical companies and other health care providers provide a holistic care while taking into account the patient's individuality that he may or may not affect his use of medication. Government sectors enhance and disseminate information about generic and branded medications through advertisements and implementation of programs to increase awareness of individuals. After the factors have known for which significantly affects medication use of Type 2 Diabetic patients, the study will serve as a guide for future researchers who are interested and want to pursue a related study regarding the pharmacologic management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus or other diseases with accordance with its treatment regimen.
