ABSTRACT: This study assessed selected non-pharmacological pain management techniques in relation to the characteristics of pain of patients in medical-surgical ward as a basis for quality alternative pain management. The study was based on selected non-pharmacological pain management techniques which are frequently used by the patients namely; therapeutic touch distraction and relaxation techniques and how it will affect the characteristics of pain perceived by the medical-surgical patients. The proponents used the cluster sampling-type in selecting the 40 respondents which are the patients of the medical-surgical ward of the Tondo Medical Center. In the data gathering procedure. The proponents wrote a letter of request addressing to Tondo Medical Center's hospital director, Dr. Victor J. Dela Cruz, M.D. CESO IV through the chief nurse Ms. Rhodora D. Quilantrip R.N, MAN. After the proponents were allowed to conduct the study the proponets looked subjects who can pass the eligibility criteria. A special cover letter then was included to the questionnaire informing the participants of the purpose of the study. Data gathering was carried out in the 2nd week of October 2009. Frequently distribution, Weighted mean, and Chi-square test were used as statistical treatment. Data were tested using 0.05 level of significance. The study achieved no significant relationship between the location, quality and level of pain perceived by the medical-surgical patients but the duration of pain has a significant relationship to the selected non-pharmacological pain management techniques. In conclusion, the duration of pain has a definite relationship to the selected non-pharmacological pain management techniques.
