ABSTRACT:Having learned how the shoulder complex works and how certain conditions lead to shoulder pain, the researchers felt the significance to know if there is presence of shoulder pain among jeepney drivers and how it effects the quality of their work. Determining the presence of shoulder pain and its effect on work could serve as good base line for work-specific studies. The purpose of this study is to determine and confirm the presence of shoulder pain among jeepney drivers and its effect on the quality of their work. Along with this, pieces of information like the type of pain, possible causes, relieving factors, and preventive measures were also accumulated that could help physical therapists in developing comprehensive programs for jeepney drivers as well as other professions which has the same demands. This study was undertaken to answer the following questions: (1) The type of pain the jeepney drivers experience; (2) To identify cause and factors of having shoulder pain, seen during work; (3) Activities done to relieve shoulder pain; (4) Preventive measures to avoid shoulder pain; (5) Effects of shoulder pain in the quality of work. A focus group was utilized in this study which was composed of eight drivers from Makati. The interview which was recorded with a camera and was also voice recorded, was conducted in Park Square Terminal where all the drivers are based. With first-hand information from the drivers, questions raised by the researchers were answered and has shown the shoulder pain is indeed present among them and was caused by biomechanical factors, with fatigue as the leading cause followed by repetitive shoulder movement and improper posture. It has also been revealed by the drivers that shoulder pain usually leads to a decrease of working time which in return leaves them less earning or sometimes none at all.
