ABSTRACT: Communication skill is an aspect for a good caring behavior. This implies interest of the nurse to improve their communication skill. And because communication skills are fundamental basis for an effective care provider, we need to know the learning capability or willingness of a nursing student as future nurses. This study aimed to assess the level of communication skills attitude and caring behavior of nursing students of the selected institutions funded by the government. Specifically, the study identified the level of positive and negative communication skills attitude of nursing students and the level of caring behavior towards patient as an individual; interpersonal relationships with patients; giving bedside care to patients; and emotions. Furthermore, it also measured the significant relationship in the level of communication skills attitude and caring behavior of nursing students. Based on the result of the study, student enhancement activity was developed to improve their communication skills attitude and caring behavior. Descriptive correlation was utilized in the study, the first adapted survey questionnaire from Steckler's communication skills attitude scale (2012) was modified by the researchers, developing their own interpretation with the permission of the author. The second adapted instrument came from Borromeo's caring behavior assessment tool. These were administered through purposive sampling technique to nursing students of PLM and UDM College of Nursing for the academic year of 2015-2016 July 2015. Weighted mean and Pearson were used in the presentation and interpretation of data to answer the problems raised in this study. The study revealed that the respondents have a very high extent level of positive communication skills reflected in the over-all mean of 4.41 and a low extent level of negative communication skills with over-all mean of 2.58. The positive communication skills attitude and caring behavior of nursing students have significant relationship with each other that rejected the null hypothesis. The negative communication skills attitude has significant relationship with the caring behavior and they are negatively correlated. The findings recommend enhancement activity giving emphasis on the development of the attitude in communication skills to increase the level of caring behavior of the students entitled, #ItsFunToCommunicate: How to be a Skilled Communicator.
