ABSTRACT: The study attempted to test the relationship between the reading and viewing preferences of the students and their academic performance in English. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the participants. A sample of 209 General Education freshmen were selected from the College of Liberal Arts of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. A survey questionnaire was made by the researcher and validated by the three experts in the field of study. This was later administered to the respondents. The study utilized descriptive method in obtaining the data needed. In the analysis of data, descriptive and correlation analyses were used. For treatment of the descriptive data, the frequency counts, percentage and weighted mean were computed. The chi-square formula was utilized in order to test the relationship between the respondents' profile in terms of: reading and viewing preferences; amount of time spent in reading and in televiewing; language spoken at home; educational attainment; average monthly family income; available reading materials and viewing devices at home; and their academic performance in English. Findings of the study revealed that the following components have affected the academic performance of the students in English: a) reading preference; b) time spent in reading c) language spoken at home; d) average monthly family income; and e) available reading materials at home. Based from the findings, it was recommended that the school should provide effective reading program through an active student reading activities and a revitalized English program.
