ABSTRACT For more than 20 years, lightweight concrete was used as floor fill, slope correction for roof decks, cast in the place walls, fireproofing and many other uses. In 1997 the Bureau of Research and Standards of the Department of the public works and highways conducted a research to determine of our locally produced lightweight aggregate can be used as structural material. The result was satisfactory, among the three classes of lightweight aggregate employed pumice and cinder can be used as a structural material. In this study, cinder is used as a lightweight aggregate because of its high compressive strength. In the design of the one-way slabs and reinforced concrete beam lightweight concrete was compared to normal weight concrete of the same compressive strength, results were tabulated and analyzed. From this analysis the following were find out. 1. The weight of the concrete does not influence the thickness of the one-way slab but instead of is its deflection. 2. The ratio of the computed longitudinal reinforcement of the lightweight concrete of the same compressive strength is 9/10. 3. In reinforced concrete beam, lightweight needs more transverse reinforcement as compared to normal weight concrete. Considering the benefits of high strength lightweight concrete, further research must be made on the material and mechanical properties of these lightweight aggregates other than cinders as a structural material, and to conduct a further more study well as its applicability of the design and construction of different concrete structures.
