Abstract

The study attempted to investigate the staff nurses level of awareness and compliance on the bundles of care for the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia as a basis for the enhancement of the existing training program of the nursing training department of the research locale. A purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents of the study thus choosing only those areas that caters for the patients treated with ventilatory support via intubation. Utilizing all of the staff nurses in the units selected the study was able to come up with 81 staff nurses respondents. A questionnaire-survey method was used to gather data utilizing the tool designed by the Flemish Society for Critical Care for the area of awareness and from the Grupo de Ayuda a la Neumonia Grave (GANG) for the tool for the compliance. The questionnaire had include three part: 1) determine the profile of the respondents, according to gender, area of assignment and years in service. 2) the area of awareness on the elements of the bundles of care for VAP prevention. Which utilized a multiple choice type of examination, about 10 item representing the different element/components of the bundles of care, and 3) area of compliance to the bundles of care for VAP prevention, which utilized a 4 point Likert scale. Data gathered were presented using the frequency distribution and analyzed using arithmetic mean, ranking and Fisher's exact test based on the 0.05 level of significance.

Result of the study had shown that majority of the respondents were female and that majority of them had a poor to very poor level of knowledge on the bundles of care for the prevention of VAP, contrary to the result of the compliance which revealed a satisfactory to very satisfactory result. Finding however, revealed only a significant difference in the knowledge of the respondents to the bundles of care when tested in terms of area of assignment.

Program enhancement was based on the significant results of the study.
