The author describes two 9th grade experiences that began his transformation from a lackadaisical student into a motivated learner. In the first incident, a word of advice from a teacher made him aware that his actions mattered. In the second, his engagement in writing a story for the school newspaper taught him the power of discovering new information and communicating it to others. These initial stirrings of motivation were strikingly similar to the academic awakenings of students in the author's recent research who have discovered their own paths to purpose. The author discusses the importance of helping students ask the why questions: Why is schooling useful in the first place? Why should I aim for ethical and moral excellence?
