ABSTRACT: HWR is a study about how to improve the capabilities of an OCR to recognizing handwritten characters. The proponents have chosen to conduct this study due to its unique use and function. Actually, there were already many studies that were conducted before about OCR and this study adds to that compilation. Upon choosing the study, the proponents came up with three problems to be solved by the end of the study: (1) Characters are inaccurately recognized when written on a different stroke; (2) Unique characters which are not included in the database but can be categorized as a legitimate character is not recognized properly; and (3) Limited space for writing. Since the existing system depends on how the character is written, we’ve based our objective (1) on how the character input will look like compared to natural alphabet, objective (2) has been formulated to have a training session for the user since everybody has its own way of treatment to a character. Objective (3) answers the limited space for writing, the proponents provided an unlimited canvass for which the user may write a long series of character. OCR or Optical Character Recognition is the capability to understand something by means of sight. The proponents tend to perform this capability in order to have a better orientation on how OCR will help our daily lives greatly.
