Undergraduate Thesis (BS in Computer Science) Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2002.;ABSTRACT: Shadows are a very relevant spatial cue. They aid in determining the relative positions of objects, particularly depth order and height of objects above the ground plane. Generasting shadows is a classic computer graphics problem, and considerable research has been devoted to it. This research entitled SHADOW CFASTING: Shadow Z-buffer Algorithm presents an enhancement of the existing Shadow Z-buffer algorithm. Overcoming the existing algorithm's drawbacks of self-shadowing, incorrect shadowing and aliasing, the proponents had come up with a better Shadow Z-buffer algorithm. The enhanced algorithm performs Percentage Closer Filtering technique, which performs better sampling method and considerably anti-aliases hard shadow edges. The enhanced algorithm is considerably more expensive and complex, but the extra work bounded by the sampling and filtering procedure justifies the improved image quality. Shadows add a lot of realism to a 3D scene. They help impact a great deal of information about movement, lighting and shape. Shadows are your friend. Use them wisely. 56
