ABSTRACT: This study aimed to propose enrichment materials on the integration of social problems in Foundations of Education I for Philippine Christian University. Specifically, this study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

What is the stand of education students of Philippine Christian University on some current Philippine social problems and their educational implications with regard to the following aspects: a) background knowledge b) degree of interest 2.

Is there a relationship between the background knowledge and degree of interest of the said respondents on some current Philippine social problems and their educational implications? 3.

What enrichment materials on social problems in Foundation of Education I can be designed in accordance with the background knowledge and degree of interest of the above respondents? The descriptive method of research was employed in this study. in terms of data collection, content analysis and survey were made use of. Books, documents and other related materials were subjected to content analysis in the light of the objectives of the study. A questionnaire was presented to education students of the Philippine Christian University to assess their background knowledge and degree of interest on some current Philippine social problems and their educational implications. Education students of the Philippine Christian University for the first semester of the school year 1996-1997 served as respondents of this study. Since the student population of the education department of the university is relatively small and readily accessible, practically all of the education students of the university took part in the study. in effect, a census survey was administered by the researcher. The following phases were embarked on by the researcher in this study: 1.

Analysis of books, documents and other materials to secure a framework of reference. 2.

Construction of a questionnaire to assess the stand of the respondents on the topic on hand a) Pretesting of the questionnaire b) Preparation of the final draft of the questionnaire c) Getting proper authorization from the school administrator 3.

Tabulation and interpretation of the data gathered from the questionnaire 4.

Development of the proposed enrichment materials The major findings of the study include the following: 1.

Out of the fifteen items on social problems and their educational implications presented to the respondents, thirteen of these items fell within the knowledgeable level. 3.

Out of the fifteen items on social problems and their educational implications tendered to the respondents, ten of these items fell within the greatly interested level. 4.

Resorting to the T-test for two independent means, the findings indicate that there is no significant relationship or difference between the background knowledge and degree of interest of the respondents on social problems and their educational implications. Based on the foregoing findings, the following conclusions were arrived at: 1.

That thirteen of the fifteen items on social problems and their educational implications presented to the respondents fell within the knowledgeable level means that the respondents were aware of the most common things about the items. 2.

That there is no significant relationship or difference between the two means showed that the background knowledge of the respondents on social problems and their educational implications was not far from their degree of interest. 4.

Considering that the respondents showed great interest in the majority of the items tendered to them, the construction of the enrichment materials was very much warranted. In the light of the above cited results and findings, the following recommendations are forwarded: 1.

That the education department of the Philippine Christian University look into the possible endorsement of the utilization of the proposed enrichment materials by all of its faculty members teaching Foundations of Education I. 2.

That the proposed enrichment materials be empirically tried out to the education students of the Philippine Christian University taking up Foundations of Education I to establish their validity, reliability and readability. 3.

That the continuous update of information about social problems and their educational implications be pursued by future researchers in the fields of education, sociology and history to keep abreast with the latest data. 4.

That the faculty members of the education department of the Philippine Christian University be encouraged to write similar enrichment materials in other professional courses in education in response to the dearth of relevant materials designed in line with the local setting that would broaden the knowledge of students and challenge their critical thinking. 5.

That the feasibility of adopting these enrichment materials be regarded by other teacher-training institutions which ultimately share the same vision- mission as the education department of the Philippine Christian University and cater to the same clientele- the Filipino people. 6.
