_aEXECUTIVE SUMMARY Uniliver Philippines, Inc. ia a leading multinational consumer goods entity in the Philippines that is primarily engaged in manufacturing, processing, refining, crushing, growing, buying, selling, importing and dealing in all kinds of soaps, detergents, washing powders, polishes, cleansing substance, perfumery, toilet requisites and food of all kinds. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of New Asia B.V. Rotterdam, Netherlands and was incorporated in the Philippines and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on December 6, 1927. It produces some of the most well known brands in the market such as Close-Up, Cream Silk, Dove, Knorr, Pond's, Rexona and Surf. Despite of being one of the leaders in the consumer goods industry, the entity experiences problem in liquidity or faces an insufficiency in liquid assets to support its operations. Uniliver operates at a too much small amount of working capital that puts pressure on the entity's short-term borrowing capacity thus, having difficulty unexpected needs for funds. It has a negative working capital that it may not be able to achieve the balance between return and risk. The entity faces overtrading which is a situation wherein it has enormous accounts payable and a lack of working capital to finance operations. This may ultimately lead to not be able to pay for the financing costs used to produce the goods. Uniliver aims to expand its operations too quickly without considering its capacity hence, running out of working capital. The aforementioned problem of the entity resulted to a declining cash and other liquid investments. It cannot maintain level of cash to meet its short-term cash requirements. Therefore, Uniliver also lost the opportunity to invest cash for an additional return and to retain sufficient liquidity to satisfy future needs. Another problem experiences by Uniliver is having a hard time in meeting its current obligations due to smaller amount of current assets. This is the domino effect since the entity not enough cash. Though the entity's current asset over time accelerates, it cannot outperform the larger amounts of current liabilities leading to unfavourable results of liquidity ratios, A high degree of operating leverage is also one of the problems that the entity faces. It operates with an abruptly high proportion of fixed operating costs or uses more fixed assets in the operation of the company. This situation is making the entity to operate with few sales but with high margins thus, it is considered to be highly leveraged. The stated problems of Uniliver Philippines make the entity suffer from illiquidity, It has a higher exposure to risk arising from its negative working capital position. If this will continue it can have significant impact on other areas of the entity's financial aspect such as profitability. The proponents aim to solve these identified problems through providing solutions which will help to the entity's more efficient operation.
